Chapter Twelve

Mel thought she was dreaming. She had to be, right?

If she was, then Dream Her knew instantly that she was in trouble. There were just no two ways about it.

She was sweating something awful the moment she opened her eyes. The fabric of her blouse was sticking to her skin with a slickness that sent a shiver through her. Her hair wasn’t faring any better. It was adhered to her forehead like someone had slapped paste on her. She tried to focus on what was going on and found nothing but the easy details around her.

Light poured through windows without curtains in a room that was as unfamiliar as they came. She was on the hard floor, lying on her back. No one else was in a room except for a woman who was also lying on the floor.

Next to Mel.

With eyes closed.

Mel struggled to get up but found her movements sluggish. Every alarm bell in her mind was blaring. It was the only reason she didn’t make a noise. She hadn’t been awake long enough to determine if she was in immediate danger. Although it wasn’t like she’d just woken from a nice slumber.

Regaining consciousness was more of what fit the bill.

Just like she had in the ambulance after the car accident.

She had to be dreaming, right?

Mel racked her brain quickly for her last memory.

Just like after the accident, there wasn’t a lot to grab.

Mel looked at the woman.

She wasn’t moving, and neither was anyone else in the vicinity. Mel took a moment to check herself. The scab from her head injury in the crash was still closed. She was wearing her own clothes but no shoes. Her head hurt, too, but not in a way that she expected. It felt fuzzy. Weird. Otherwise, physically, she seemed okay.

Mel wasn’t about to sit still and wait for answers to come to her so she stood, slowly.

The cabin was not unlike other fishing cabins that she’d visited in the South. You could only live so long in a place called Kelby Creek before you actually fished in the creek. This cabin, unlike one you might find in the mountains that was made of charming logs and wood galore, was more function than flair. She was in the main living space with furniture that looked older than her thirty years and a kitchenette in the corner whose heyday had probably been when it was first built. It was also clearly used. There were beer cans littering the surfaces, crushed and tops popped, and the distinct smell of fish in the air. Probably cleaned and cooked right there in the room when there was a catch.

Two doors ran across the back wall, and one was opened to show a bathroom. The other one was closed.

It had a metal clasp at the top with a padlock attached.

Mel felt another shiver go through her at the sight.

The last door was the one behind her. It led outside. Through the window next to it, Mel saw grass, dirt and a dock that hung over water in the distance.
